From a DevOps engineer’s perspective, the Linux terminal and shell are foundational for a DevOps engineer, providing the capabilities needed for efficient system management, automation, and the implementation of DevOps practices. Their versatility, power, and integration with a vast ecosystem of tools make them indispensable in the world of DevOps.

We begin with the concept of the terminal, also known as a terminal emulator or soft terminal. These terms describe the same essential tool: a program that offers a text-based user interface.

In essence, a terminal facilitates the input of characters from the keyboard and their subsequent display on the screen. Historically, terminals were standalone devices combining a keyboard and screen. However, in modern computing, they exist primarily as software applications.

Beyond just handling basic character input and output, terminals also utilize special sequences known as escape sequences or escape codes.
